The Thanksgiving table has had its overdone years: plastic gourds, orange everything, a centrepiece so tall nobody could see across it. The tables people are setting now are calmer and better looking. Real pumpkins in soft colours, plenty of linen, candlelight and a room that’s dressed as carefully as the table.
The 33 tables below share those two ingredients, pumpkins and linen, and almost nothing else. Some are formal dining rooms with layered china and silver. Others are long open-plan kitchen tables, a farmhouse trestle for twenty, a round table for four or a simple runner with a scatter of mini pumpkins. Not every one needs to be elaborate. Every one of them looks like a room you’d want to sit down in for a long dinner.
33. A Formal Dining Room Dressed in Ivory Linen and Heirloom Pumpkins

A formal dining room calls for a formal table, and this one goes all the way: a floor-length ivory linen cloth, gilt-rimmed china on brass chargers, crystal goblets and silver. The centrepiece stays low, white and pale-green heirloom pumpkins tucked into magnolia leaves, so everyone can still see across the table.
Putty-coloured panelling and the crystal chandelier do the rest. The palette is quiet enough that the candlelight carries the room.
32. An Open-Plan Farmhouse Table With Mini Pumpkins Down the Middle

In an open-plan house the dining table is part of the kitchen, so it has to look good from the stove. An oatmeal linen runner and a long line of mini pumpkins and tapers turn a white oak table into the room’s focal point without hiding the kitchen beyond.
Stoneware plates and linen napkins tied with twine keep it relaxed, which is the whole point of eating where you cook.
31. Plaid, Pewter and Pumpkins in an English Country Dining Room

The English country dining room does Thanksgiving with a lot of layering: tartan over linen, pewter chargers, blue-and-white transferware and a fire going in the stone fireplace. Tan and green heirloom pumpkins tucked in among dried wheat keep the centrepiece earthy.
Deep green walls and oil paintings make the room feel old and lived-in, and candlelight brings out the shine of the pewter.
30. White Pumpkins and Bare Ash on a Scandinavian Table

A Scandinavian table is defined by what it leaves out. There’s no cloth, just bare pale ash, natural linen napkins, matte white plates and a few white pumpkins with sprigs of eucalyptus.
A row of white pillar candles and a big paper pendant make the room glow without adding a single colour.
29. A Provençal Table Draped in Rust Linen With Pumpkins From the Market

A French country Thanksgiving looks like it came straight from the market: a rust-coloured washed linen cloth, mismatched antique plates and green and tan Provençal pumpkins scattered down the table.
Earthenware jugs of olive branches and an iron candle chandelier finish a room that feels as if it has hosted a hundred harvest dinners.
28. Mid-Century Lines, Mustard Linen and Sculptural Pumpkins

Mid-century design loves a sculptural object, and here the pumpkins are chosen like ceramics: a few blush and white ones in different shapes on a mustard linen runner. The walnut oval table, molded chairs and a Sputnik-style chandelier set the era.
Brass candlesticks of varying heights echo the chandelier, and the window wall frames the dusk outside.
27. A Farm Table for Twenty in a Converted Barn

When the whole extended family comes, only a long table will do. This one is a reclaimed-wood trestle for twenty, set in a converted barn under timber trusses and iron chandeliers.
Undyed linen runs the full length, with wood chargers, cream stoneware and a sprig of rosemary on every napkin. Dozens of candles in glass hurricanes make the big room feel close.
26. Driftwood, Sea Grass and Pale Pumpkins at a Beach House Thanksgiving

A beach house Thanksgiving stays pale and simple: a sand-coloured linen cloth, white plates and a low runner of driftwood, dried sea grass and blue-grey and white pumpkins.
White shiplap and woven chairs keep it breezy, and the dunes outside the window turn gold at dusk.
25. Clay Plates, Linen and Ghost Pumpkins in a Modern Organic Great Room

Would you like to save this?
Modern organic rooms are all soft curves and natural finishes, so the table follows suit: handmade clay plates, flax linen and a low ceramic bowl of ghost-white pumpkins and dried branches on a round travertine table.
Beeswax candles give a warmer, honey-coloured light than paraffin, which suits the limewash walls perfectly.
24. Velvet, Candelabras and Cinderella Pumpkins in a Victorian Dining Room

Victorian dining rooms were built for big, theatrical dinners, and this one goes all in: burgundy damask walls, tall silver candelabras, cut crystal and red-orange Cinderella pumpkins piled with dark grapes.
Cream linen and a lace runner keep the table from going too dark, and the candelabras light it from above.
23. A Long Outdoor-Indoor Table With Linen Napkins and Desert Pumpkins

In California, Thanksgiving can happen with the doors wide open. A long white oak table runs right up to the courtyard, with simple white plates, natural linen napkins and olive branches woven between tan and pale-green pumpkins.
String lights in the olive trees outside and low candles inside make the room feel twice its size.
22. Dark Beams, Leaded Glass and a Pumpkin Feast Table

A Tudor dining hall is made for a feast, so the table is lavish: deep orange and green pumpkins, pomegranates and autumn leaves heaped down the centre, with pewter and copper chargers and amber glassware.
Dark beams, leaded windows and a roaring stone fireplace make it feel like a manor-house harvest dinner.
21. A Transitional Kitchen-Dining Table in Cream Linen and Copper

Transitional rooms split the difference between traditional and modern, and this table does the same: copper chargers and candlesticks with simple white plates on a cream linen runner.
The marble island in the background stays clear for serving, so the table reads as a calm, finished room within the kitchen.
20. Just Enough: A Japandi Table With Three Pumpkins and Linen

Japandi is about restraint, so this table uses exactly three pumpkins of different sizes on a wooden board, one branch in a vase and grey linen napkins on bare dark oak.
Handmade stoneware and a paper lantern give it warmth, and it proves a beautiful Thanksgiving table doesn’t need to be full.
19. A Spanish Revival Dining Room With Terracotta, Linen and Pumpkins

A Spanish Revival dining room has its own warm palette, so terracotta plates and orange pumpkins look right at home against the white plaster and saltillo floors.
Natural linen and wrought iron candlesticks keep the table earthy, and the arched window frames the evening.
18. Flannel, Firelight and Pumpkins at a Mountain Cabin Thanksgiving

A cabin Thanksgiving is all about warmth: a plaid wool runner over undyed linen, mini pumpkins and pinecones and candles in lanterns, with a fire going and snow outside.
Simple enamel-rimmed plates and a rustic pine table keep it casual, the way a mountain weekend should feel.
17. Blue-and-White China, Linen and White Pumpkins in a Hamptons Dining Room

A Hamptons dining room does Thanksgiving in blue and white: ginger-jar style china on rattan chargers, white and pale-blue pumpkins with white hydrangeas, and silver candlesticks.
A white linen cloth and grasscloth walls keep it crisp and coastal, a long way from the usual orange.
16. A Loft Table for Friends: Linen, Candles and a Pumpkin Scatter

Friendsgiving in a loft doesn’t need a formal setting. A rumpled linen runner, mismatched plates, dozens of tea lights and a loose scatter of mini pumpkins on a long reclaimed table are enough.
Exposed brick and the city lights through the steel windows supply the drama.
15. A Georgian Dining Room Set With Silver, Crystal and Heirloom Pumpkins

Would you like to save this?
A Georgian dining room wants symmetry, so everything here is in pairs and lines: silver candelabra, crystal and a centrepiece of white and tan heirloom pumpkins trailing ivy.
Duck-egg panelling and tall shuttered windows keep it light and elegant, the most refined table on this list.
14. Wood Boards, Linen Napkins and Pumpkins: The Easy Farmhouse Table

The easiest table on this list might also be the most useful. Wood boards laid down the centre of a bare oak table hold small pumpkins and candles, with white plates and natural linen napkins.
When dinner comes out, the boards become serving trays, so nothing has to move.
13. Art Deco Glamour: Black Lacquer, Gold and Blush Pumpkins

An Art Deco Thanksgiving swaps orange for blush: blush linen napkins and blush and white pumpkins against black lacquer, gold flatware and coupe glasses.
A fan-shaped chandelier and mirrored panels multiply the candlelight, which makes it the most glamorous table here.
12. A Craftsman Dining Room With Quartersawn Oak and Harvest Linen

Craftsman dining rooms come with their own warmth: quartersawn oak, a built-in buffet with leaded glass and a mica chandelier. A harvest-gold linen runner, earthenware plates and copper candlesticks fit right in.
Green and orange pumpkins with oak leaves bring the outside in, as the Arts and Crafts movement intended.
11. A Small Round Table for Four That Still Feels Like a Celebration

Not every Thanksgiving is for twenty. A round table for four in a bay-window corner can feel just as special with a floor-length linen cloth, four tapers and a small arrangement of mini pumpkins and roses.
Small tables reward small luxuries: proper linen, real candles and flowers you can smell from your seat.
10. A Long Italian Table in an Old Stone Dining Room

Italians know how to set a long table, and this one feeds twelve under a vaulted stone ceiling: cream linen, olive-green napkins, olive branches, pots of herbs and loaves of bread on boards between the pumpkins.
It’s the most relaxed kind of elegance, a table that looks generous rather than formal.
9. A Shaker Table: Peg Rail, Linen and a Line of Pumpkins

The Shakers believed in plain, well-made things, and that suits a Thanksgiving table perfectly: a narrow linen runner, pewter plates and one straight line of small pumpkins and beeswax tapers.
A peg rail holding chairs and a lantern on the wall completes a room that’s beautiful because of what it leaves out.
8. A Statement Table in an Open-Plan Great Room With a Wall of Windows

In a double-height great room the table has to hold its own, so it’s a long live-edge walnut slab for twelve under a linear brass chandelier, with a grey-green linen runner and a long low line of soft-green and white pumpkins with fern fronds.
Smoked glassware and matte stoneware keep it modern, and the lake view at dusk does the rest.
7. A Cottage Table With Floral Linen, Teacups and Little Pumpkins

A cottage Thanksgiving is charming rather than grand: a floral linen cloth, mismatched vintage plates and little pumpkins tucked into teacups at every place.
Jam-jar flowers and a dresser full of china behind the table make it feel like dinner at a favourite grandmother’s.
6. A Kitchen Island Buffet With Linen and a Pumpkin Runner

For a big, casual crowd, set the island as a buffet and the table simply. Linen-lined platters, stacks of plates and rolled linen napkins with flatware make serving yourself feel thoughtful.
A runner of pumpkins and candles along the island ties the two together.
5. A Parisian Apartment Table With Herringbone Floors and Candlelight

Would you like to save this?
A Paris apartment hosts Thanksgiving with French polish: a white linen cloth, bistro plates, crystal and a low arrangement of white and blush pumpkins with roses.
Pale grey boiserie, herringbone parquet and a gilt mirror over the marble fireplace give it the elegance only these old rooms have.
4. A Colonial Keeping Room Table With Pewter and Pumpkins by the Hearth

A colonial keeping room is where Thanksgiving traditions began, and this one sets the table by the great brick hearth: homespun linen, pewter plates and tankards, heirloom pumpkins and apples.
Beeswax tapers in iron holders and the fire light it the way it would have been lit centuries ago.
3. Emerald Velvet Chairs, Ivory Linen and Pale Pumpkins

Deep emerald velvet chairs make this table, and everything on it is pale to let them shine: an ivory linen cloth, white and gold plates and a long runner of white and green pumpkins with ivy.
Dozens of candles and a modern brass chandelier make the velvet glow.
2. A Lake House Porch-Room Table With Plaid Linen and Pumpkins

A lake house sunroom makes a perfect Thanksgiving dining room when the view is this good: windows on three sides, a long pine table and a sunset over the water.
A soft plaid linen runner, stoneware plates and mason-jar candles keep it relaxed and family-friendly.
1. The Thanksgiving Table We’d Set Tomorrow: Linen, Heirloom Pumpkins and Candlelight

Number one takes the best of everything above: washed ivory linen, layered cream and gold china, crystal, and a long, low centrepiece of heirloom pumpkins in cream, blush and pale green with garden roses and magnolia.
The dining room opens to a fire in the next room, and the candles are lit before anyone sits down. It’s the table we’d most like to spend a long Thanksgiving evening around.
